How customs duty, Social Welfare Surcharge and IGST are calculated on goods imported from China to India, with a worked example of the landed cost.
The price the Chinese supplier quotes is only part of what an import costs. Duties and taxes assessed at the Indian port can add a large share on top, so you need to estimate them before you place an order.
Customs normally assesses duty on the CIF value: the cost of goods plus freight and insurance to the Indian port. Where actual landing charges are not known, an additional 1% of CIF is commonly added. This is why the Incoterm in your supplier's quote matters.
| Step | Calculation | Amount (₹) |
|---|---|---|
| CIF value | Goods + freight + insurance | 1,00,000 |
| Landing charges | 1% of CIF | 1,000 |
| Assessable value | CIF + landing charges | 1,01,000 |
| BCD at 10% | 10% of 1,01,000 | 10,100 |
| SWS | 10% of BCD | 1,010 |
| IGST at 18% | 18% of (1,01,000 + 10,100 + 1,010) | 20,180 |
| Total duty and tax | 31,290 |
The rates above are examples only. The real BCD and IGST rates depend on the HS code of your product and the current tariff.
A GST-registered business importing goods for business use can usually claim the IGST paid as input tax credit, subject to GST rules. Confirm this with your accountant.
